August 23 - Wholly SanctifiedTopic: Purity1 Thessalonians 5:16-24We bring as a text today those familiar words found in 1 Thessalonians 5:23-24, “Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it.” No subject is more important or more timely than the one brought to us in this text-that of entire sanctification. This is the only passage in which a distinction in degrees of sanctification is found. But the term sanctification is often, even usually, used in the New Testament with the sense of full or entire sanctification. However, there is a sense in which all justified Christians are sanctified. The primary idea in the word sanctify, when used in the evangelical sense, is to make clean, and there is an approach toward purity in the cleansing away of the guilt of sin in regeneration. So, at the risk of being misinterpreted (we think we can scarcely be misunderstood), we are bound to say that all Christians are sanctified, but not all are sanctified wholly. All true Christians have had their sins forgiven, and have thus been cleansed from guilt. But there remains in the hearts of the regenerated a pollution which is inherent because of the fallen state and condition of humankind. This residue of sin requires a second, definite work of grace for its eradication and destruction. So at the present time, we are not dealing with initial sanctification as it relates to those receiving forgiveness, but with full or entire sanctification as the right and heritage of those who leave the principles of Christ and go on to perfection. We will limit the scope of our treatment to four phases of sanctification. In order to approach our theme, we bring to you four passages of scripture in addition to the text. The first of these is John 17:17, “Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.” The second is Hebrews 13:12, “So Jesus also suffered outside the gate in order to sanctify the people through his own blood.” The third is Acts 26:18, just a portion of the verse, “Sanctified by faith in me.” The last is part of Romans 15:16, “That the offering of the Gentiles may be acceptable, sanctified by the Holy Spirit.” We have here in these four scriptures the same number of phases of sanctification set forth: (1) Sanctified through the truth, (2) sanctified by the Blood, (3) sanctified by faith, (4) and sanctified by the Holy Ghost. Now no sane person can suppose that there are four ways of getting sanctified and that someone may take his choice. There must be one way to get sanctified and that one way must involve the four phases now before us. That is, if one is sanctified wholly, he must be sanctified through the truth, by the Blood, by faith, and by the Holy Ghost.Adapted from Some Writings of J. B. Chapman

Revelation 22:18-19 (KJV) 18 For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: 19 And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book. It is of great significance that the Bible closes with an affirmation of its truthfulness. Because the words of Scripture are "faithful and true" (22:6), they must not be sealed up, but proclaimed (22:10). Sinners are to be called to respond to the warnings in the Word of the living God or suffer the consequences. All the prophecies of Revelation regarding the doom of sinners will come true. That terrifying certainty should drive people to Jesus Christ to escape the wrath to come (1 Thess. 1:10).The speaker who testifies to the authority and finality of the words of the prophecy of this book is none other than the Lord Jesus Christ (cf. v. 20). His solemn warning against tampering with Scripture applies first of all to the prophecy of the book of Revelation (cf. 1:3). Down through the centuries there have been others who have both attacked Revelation and seriously misinterpreted it. But in light of the repeated warnings against altering God's Word, Christ's warning must be broadened to include all of Scripture. In Deuteronomy 4:2 Moses cautioned, "You shall not add to the word which I am commanding you, nor take away from it, that you may keep the commandments of the Lord your God which I command you." In Deuteronomy 12:32 he added, "Whatever I command you, you shall be careful to do; you shall not add to nor take away from it." Proverbs 30:5-6 warns, "Every word of God is tested; He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him. Do not add to His words or He will reprove you, and you will be proved a liar." The canon of Scripture was closed at the end of the first century when Revelation was finished. Thus, any false prophet, fraud, or charlatan who adds alleged new revelations to it (as the Montanists did in the early church and Joseph Smith, Mary Baker Eddy, and other false prophets have done in recent times) will face divine vengeance. God will add to such people the plagues which are written in the book of Revelation. God's judgment will be equally severe on anyone who takes away from the words of Scripture. No true believer would ever deliberately tamper with Scripture. Those who know and love God will treat His Word with the utmost respect. They will say with the psalmist, "O how I love Your law!" The Lord's warning here is addressed to those who engage in deliberate falsification or misinterpretation of Scripture, those whom Paul denounces as peddlers of the Word of God (2 Cor. 2:17).MacArthur New Testament Commentary, The - Revelation 12-22.

01/25/2024 More Than ConquerorsReflectionWhile Paul’s epistles are full of deep theological truths, one of his most dense letters was the one to the church in Rome. It was one of the more multicultural churches of its day, with both Jewish and Gentile members.Paul addresses a great deal of difficult questions from salvation, to appropriate behavior, to how to relate to earthly powers. It is a letter which is trying to communicate specific ideas to a broad audience that come from many different contexts. Thematically, Romans 8 comes after a discussion about freedom in Christ from the law and from sin, and before a switch towards a discussion about God’s sovereignty.Christians are more than conquerors through the blood of Jesus not only for salvation but for the turning of evil to good. The hope and strength of our faith allow us to endure knowing that it produces far greater rewards. We are able to love our enemies and persevere because of the love Jesus Christ showed us. We are not more than conquerors because of our own ability to escape the struggles and hardships, but because of what Jesus has done for us and is doing through us. PrayerHeavenly Father, because Jesus died for our sins and conquered death, we are now more than conquerors over our trials and sufferings, we now proclaim victory over all things in Jesus Christ Holy name. Thank You our great and mighty Lord for Your Mercy, Grace and Love, for making our victory possible through the blood sacrifice of Jesus Christ, that paid our sin debt in full. We praise You for all things in our life and shout victory on high to our Lord and Savior. In Jesus Christ Holy name I pray, amen.Quote “It is through our sufferings that we learn to be conquerors and be victorious in our faith in Jesus Christ.”- Chuck Kyser Scriptures * Romans 8:31-3931 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?32 He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?33 Who shall bring a charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies.34 Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us.35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?36 As it is written: "For Your sake we are killed all day long; We are accounted as sheep for the slaughter." 37 Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.38 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come,39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. From the heart of brother – Chuck

"In its broadest significance, the doctrine of salvation includes every divine undertaking for the believer from his deliverance out of the lost estate to his final presentation in glory conformed to the image of Christ. Since the divine objective is thus all-inclusive, the theme is divided naturally into three tenses: (a) The Christian was saved when he believed (Luke 7:50; Acts 16:30–31; 1 Cor 1:18; 2 Cor 2:15; Eph 2:8; 2 Tim 1:9). This past-tense aspect of it is the essential and unchanging fact of salvation. At the moment of believing, the saved one is completely delivered from his lost estate, cleansed, forgiven, justified, born of God, clothed in the merit of Christ, freed from all condemnation, and safe for evermore. (b) The believer is being saved from the dominion of sin (Rom 6:1–14; 8:2; 2 Cor 3:18; Gal 2:20; 4:19; Phil 1:19; 2:12; 2 Th 2:13). In this second tense of salvation the believer is being divinely preserved and sanctified. (c) The believer is yet to be saved from the presence of sin when presented faultless in glory (Rom 13:11; 1 Th 5:8; Heb 1:14; 9:28; 1 Pet 1:3–5; 1 John 3:1–3). To this may be added other passages which, each in turn, present all three tenses or aspects of salvation—1 Cor 1:30; Phil 1:6; Eph 5:25–27; 1 Th 1:9–10; Tit 2:11–13.” (Lewis Sperry Chafer, Systematic Theology, vol. 3, p. 6)

Step 111: THE DOCTRINE OF SIN AND MANa) Sin with its consequence is the most hazardous fact about man - cf. Rom. 6:23.b) Its origin, nature, consequences and cure are contained in Scripture - cf. 6:66-69.c) The sole Saviour from sin man has had is Christ. (ibid)i. Every research on man's sin is likely followed by the study of the person and work of Jesus Christ, His Saviour.CONCLUSION:All about God is man's desire for growth and development: "God has done nothing but by man. Man has done nothing but by God. It is God speaking in man; God speaking by man; God speaking as man; God speaking for man." God revealing Himself to man in doctrine rhymes with the above statement made by someone. It is therein that man finds fulfillment here and hereafter.EVALUATION:1. Why does man need Scriptures in His existence?2. What is the relationship between God and Scriptures?3. How will studies on angels improve on man's well-being?4a. If man can handle "offense" , why can he not handle "sin" ?b. Why will man look up to God in matters of sin?

Camille Gail Weston "Jesus' little brown sheep" Bible Devotional - The Remix 2024Today is February 15, 2024.(There is more... 1 of 2)"but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, ‘Be holy, for I am holy.’ And if you call on the Father, who without partiality judges according to each one’s work, conduct yourselves throughout the time of your stay here in fear; knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot. He indeed was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you who through Him believe in God, who raised Him from dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God." – 1 Peter 1:15-21Our standard of holiness has depreciated significantly from the times lived in during the Old Testament. It is as if humanity has become, in some cases, nonchalant about the seriousness of sin. As a result of these repeated, unresolved reckonings… the intensity and severity of sin has increased and become rampant in our society. It was in this study today, that I was able to garner a comparative perspective of how we regard sin today versus how unjustifiable sin was then.Consider, by measure, the reckoning for sin in the context of the sin itself in this passage of Scripture."Or if a person swears, speaking thoughtlessly with his lips to do evil or to do good, whatever it is that a man may produce by an oath, and he is unaware of it — when he realizes it, then he shall be guilty in any of these matters. And it shall be, when he is guilty in any of these matters, that he shall confess that he has sinned in that thing; and he shall bring his trespass offering to the Lord for his sin which he has committed, a female from the flock, a lamb or a kid of the goats as a sin offering." – Leviticus 5:4-6The ensuing sacrifice to atone for the sin, at this time in history; was severe, gory, expensive and a horrible experience for everyone involved. Allow me to reiterate that the sin under our analysis was to speak thoughtlessly. This is the law of God, so the judgment is perfect.Honestly, how seriously do we consider thoughtless speaking today? It still has dire consequences. Gossip has led to death. Think Calvary.Yet, I am concerned that all of humanity (including myself) needs a serious moment of contemplation to fully understand what sin is within the context of holiness, as holiness is according to God.(There is more... 1 of 2)
