It's kills our the predators - Most spraying companies use non-targeted pesticides that can kill a variety of insects, including dragonflies, bees, butterflies, and ladybugs. These pesticides can also be harmful to fish and other aquatic life if they run off into water. Try lavender, basil, mint, marigolds, catmint, lemon balm and geraniums, eucalyptus essential oil if ya need a spray, look at Beat It, Skeeter Beater (new seller, same old results!) |

And if you HAVE to spray there is insecticidal soap. Works on contact. |

Citronella plants and lemongrass are also great natural mosquito repellents. |

Mint. Rub a handful onto your skin. Repels most insects quite well. |

I'd be real worried how bad the mosquitos would be if we just stopped spraying. And I hate spraying that "Off" stuff on my skin. Dragonflies eat mosquitos and other insects. I was visiting a friend down in Goodland FL (look it up) years ago. Early in the morning a helicopter flew low over head and we could see "stuff" coming out of it. I asked Carol and she said: "Oh, they dump out Dragonflies to control the mosquitos!" The helicopter made quite a few passes every morning. So there's another way to control those pests. I imagine it would be more expensive than what we do here. |

Summer evenings in S Nags Head what I call the DDT truck drives along the creek spraying who knows what. I hate it, but wonder how bad it would be if nothing was done. I was looking for some pest work and disregarded the companies that offered mosquito/tick spray (ground zero service) for the yard. |

The mosquito truck used to drive through our neighborhood a couple times during the summer. You could hear it coming a couple streets away. We kids would run behind it in the “fog” for fun. I’m sure it wasn’t the healthiest thing to do but no one ever thought anything of it. I seem to remember still getting lots of mosquito bites. Late 1960’s |

I’m sure it wasn’t the healthiest thing to do but I think the reason that I am so healthy at age 75 is because I breathed so much DDT and diesel exhaust when I was young. We called it the smoke truck and would ride behind it on our bicycles, the closer the better. |

We have pretty cool black-bodied dragon/damsel flies with almost clear wings, except for a little black patch about mid wing. They fly fast and maybe a foot above the grass when you're walking around. I nicknamed them stealth flies because they are really hard to see in the shade or when the sun is low. They show up in the spring a couple of weeks after the biting midges and deer flies come out. Once the job is complete, the stealth flies move on, presumably to the north. |

I call the fogging truck that drives through the HI neighborhoods, the agent orange truck. It can't be good really even though I have been told that the chemicals are not supposed to be bad for humans. Who knows anymore??!! |

The deer flies dare not mess with us when we walk down the driveway when these guys are around. |

What kid growing up in South Jersey in the 60's can forget this? Nothing like a dose of DDT before mom called us in for the night. Ah, such great memories. |

What kid growing up in South Jersey in the 60's can forget this? Nothing like a dose of DDT before mom called us in for the night. Yep. "The bug truck" was in Williamsburg, Va. too. One couple up the street were hippies... err... granolas... let's just say the mom didn't shave. If their kids were out of their compound when the bug truck came by it was sheer terror. And their kids were the ones that liked to ride their bikes right behind it breathing in all the goodness. The rest of us kids in the hood figured that probably wasn't a good idea. |

One more comment in support of natural predators... the titmouses (can I say that?) love the bugs stirred up by my tractor when I cut the grass. They perch on my fence and low tree branches, then swoop in to gobble up a free meal as I pass by. |

Hubby was up way too early and is out in the heat (going to 97) vaccinating lambs. We had 30 born in April. I’m staying in where it’s cool and wishing I was on the beach in NH. |

Speaking of critters that eat mosquitos a couple of years ago we had to deal with a colony of bats (ugh) that was living in our attic. Cost us $2000 to get rid of them. They were good for getting rid of mosquitos. I’d rather have mosquitos. BTW getting rid of bats is quite an ordeal. |
