Michigan Strawberry Picking season is finally here, and Michigan strawberry season is a special time!

For some, Strawberry Upick farms are a well-kept secret here; most tourists accidentally discover strawberry fields when they pull off the road to buy some fruit at a fruit stand along M-22 or another scenic country road in Michigan.

But the truth is, Strawberry U-Pick farms can be found all over the state, from the most northern point in the UP in Chassell to the very corner of the southeast side of the mitten in Ida. UPick is a term that people either grew up with or learned for the first time when they were visiting a place like Michigan with endless fields across the state.

There’s northing quite like fresh strawberries: the taste of the fruit picked right off the vine really can’t compare with store-bought strawberries.

When Is Strawberry Picking Season in Michigan?

The long-awaited Michigan strawberry picking season signals the start of summer, and there’s nothing like a locally grown strawberry at the peak of freshness.

It starts around mid-June when the strawberries start to ripen on the vine; suddenly it’s the start of picking season.

All of the following strawberry farms are family-owned and operated, and farmers are very creative. Each and every one of these strawberry patches have a unique twist or feature that sets them apart from others.

Read on to find out which ones you can make it to this season – but don’t worry, strawberry U-Pick season lasts for the first three weeks of June and into July in parts of Northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula, so you can visit as many as you can drive to!

U-Pick Strawberry Farms in the Upper Peninsula

Pellegrini’s Strawberry Farm
2702 16.5 Rd, Escanaba, MI 49829

Nestled in the southwest region of the Upper Peninsula, you can find this family-owned farm that has been in business for nearly 50 years. The Pellegrini family started the farm as a side job for their kids to earn money for college, and now it serves as a seven-acre U- Pick farm complete with several different varieties of strawberries.

Be sure to ask the owners some of their favorite strawberry recipes (like strawberry pie), for some insider information.

Crane Berry Farm
44416 Paradise Rd, Chassell, MI 49916

This strawberry farm is located next to Portage Lake and Keweenaw Bay, offering beautiful views and plenty of berries. Crane Farm is also preparing for the 74th annual Chassell Lions Copper Country Strawberry Festival that begins on July 7th.

The festival ends when the last shortcake is sold on Saturday. Put it on your calendars to see a children’s parade, a strawberry auction, and the Strawberry Festival Parade. In the meantime, Crane Berry Farm is open to the public and sells its farm-fresh strawberries by the quart.

Northern Michigan UPick Strawberry Farms

AJ’s Berry Farm
1150 Salina Rd, Lachine, MI 49753

West of Alpena in North Michigan is AJ’s Berry Farm, another family-owned strawberry patch. In 1997 the owner decided to try his hand at growing strawberries, and he has been very successful ever since. Now they grow all kinds of produce including raspberries, saskatoons, pumpkins, and other seasonal fruits and vegetables.

Their farm store has homemade jams for sale, as well as some other locally made products and baked goods. When you arrive make sure you go to the barn first and follow their directions so you can find the best berries available that day.

Guntzviller’s Berry and Vegetable Farm
11122 US-31, Williamsburg, MI 49690

Guntzviller’s was actually the first experience I ever had with the U-Pick process, and it kickstarted my love for finding charming farms all over the state to pick strawberries and other fruit. They have almost every berry you can think of, tons of asparagus, fresh eggs, and other vegetables. If you can’t make it to Williamsburg, right outside of Traverse City, then be sure to catch them at any of the local farmers markets Wednesday through Saturday.

PRO-TIP: After the U-Pick, drive a few miles up the road to Elk Rapids to watch the sunset over Lake Michigan, and enjoy some dessert at Ice Cream Peddlers. This area of Michigan has some of the best sunsets you’ll ever see.

Fairview Berry and Flower Farm
3788 Mast Rd, Fairview, MI 48621

The final U-Pick farm we’ve selected for you is the Fairview Berry and Flower Farm in north Michigan. Not only do they have strawberries, raspberries, grapes, and flowers for picking, but they also have their own wildflower fields.

Currently, they have an incredible sunflower field and a breathtaking Zinnia field that will make you wish you lived there. Ask the owners about their Flower Barn and walking trails, as well as their homemade treats and featured artwork from local artists. This community-based and family-owned farm is constantly adding different things to make their U-Pick experience unique.

Scherer’s U-Pick Strawberries
5118 Hollywood Rd, St Joseph, MI 49085

Set in one of southwest Michigan’s most popular tourist destinations, Scherer’s has an amazing selection of berries and views. Their charming strawberry fields are located rurally enough to be on a true farm, while also being central enough to feel close to the city of St. Joe.

PRO-TIP: Make sure you visit Nye’s Apple Barn for some fresh produce, homemade jams, caramel apples, and more. It will be just the inspiration you’ll need to turn your handpicked strawberries into a strawberry rhubarb pie.

Mandigo Farms
61077 41st St, Paw Paw, MI 49079

Located right next to Threemile Lake in Southwest Michigan, Mandigo Farms has been in operation since 1955. They’ll provide the containers, so just come ready to pick. If you run out of time (it’s okay, we all lose track of time as soon as the sun comes out in Michigan), they always have plenty of prepicked strawberries to take home.

This is a great stop to make on your way to the beaches of West Michigan or on your way to Kalamazoo for some shopping. Check out our Kalamazoo MI: Ultimate Visitors Guide for more insider information.

Strawberry Patch Visser Farms
7200 112th Ave, Holland, MI 49424

Like so much of west Michigan, Visser Farms is rich in history. They’ve been farming their land since 1902 and have evolved into more farming ventures with each generation.

They not only have some of the best strawberries in all of west Michigan, but they also have fresh vegetables and flowers, and they can be found each weekend at local farmers markets. They even provide fresh produce to locally-owned restaurants in the area. Stop by this strawberry patch to get a taste of an authentic west Michigan family. Plus, if you’re strawberry picking near Holland, plan a side trip to see the Big Red Lighthouse at Holland State Park!

Veenstra Family Strawberry Farm
8515 S 200th Ave, Holton, MI 49425

Speaking of farm country, Veenstra Family Strawberry Farm in Holton is right in the middle of a large stretch of green on the mitten. West Michigan is known for having some of the best beaches in the state, but it’s also known for its many miles of trees and fields.

Take a trip out here to see some beautiful scenery and make sure you stock up on the strawberries at the Veenstra’s before taking advantage of the walking trails nearby.

UPick Strawberry Farms in Mid-Michigan

Bischer’s Berries
1450 E McTaggart Rd, Ubly, MI 48475

Like most things in the Thumb of Michigan, Bischer’s Berries is a hidden treasure. Bischer’s is owned by Gentner-Bischer Farms, a farming family with strong ties in the thumb. They have a pumpkin patch, corn maze, and sweet corn available at their home farm between Ruth and Minden City, while the U-Pick is in Ubly.

This is a newer U-Pick farm in Michigan, but the family has been farming in the Thumb for five generations. The best part about this produce farm is that you can stock up on some refreshing strawberries on your way to the beaches of Caseville and Port Austin. Be sure to check out our Caseville and Port Austin Beach Guide before you go.

Strawberry Fields Farm
14621 Lakefield Rd, Hemlock, MI 48626

South of Saginaw and west of Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge, Strawberry Fields Farm is right in the center of all the best parts of our state. After loading up on strawberries, you can experience the many lakes and trails near the farm, and head over to Saginaw Bay to spend the rest of the day on the water.

Harold Howard Strawberry Farm
11508 W Remus Rd, Remus, MI 49340

Smack-dab in the middle of the mitten, the Harold Howard Strawberry Farm has been a staple in the true Michigan summer experience for people in the area. Because it is situated between the Canadian Lakes and Lake Isabella, you can spend the day here or make it a stop on a road trip to a beach or state forest nearby.

Diederich Berry Farms
3537 Morrice Rd, Webberville, MI 48892

If you aren’t familiar with Michigan, it can be hard to imagine that farm country exists in between big cities like Lansing and Detroit, but it’s true. Diederich Berry Farms is an idyllic little farm that can feel like it is hours from a big city when it’s really only a 30-minute drive from Lansing.

This U-Pick farm offers amazing strawberry fields and even more once strawberry season is over. Make this a consistent visit throughout the summer months so you can benefit from everything they have to offer: asparagus, tomatoes, sweet corn, zucchini, squash, beets, and so much more.

UPick Strawberry Farms in Southeast Michigan and Metro Detroit

Middleton Berry Farm
4790 Oakwood Rd, Ortonville, MI 48462

Between Flint and Detroit, you’ll find the town of Ortonville and the 40 acres belonging to the Middleton Berry Farm. Of those 40 acres, 6 acres are a wild pollinator preserve (you can but local honey here), another 6 acres are where all of the berries and flowers are planted, and the rest of the land is left untouched and natural to keep the farm country feeling alive.

Along with strawberries, you and your family can also pick your own raspberries, blueberries, and even flowers sold by the stem. The owners have many great suggestions for care and prep of the berries and flowers, so don’t be shy if you have a question.

Rowes Produce Farm
10570 Martz Rd Ypsilanti, MI 48197

One of the top u pick farms in southeast Michigan, this Ypsilanti farm offers a variety of Upick fruits and vegetables thoughout the season.

Whittaker’s Berry Farm
6724 Todd Rd, Ida, MI 48140

In the southeast corner of the state you’ll find the amazing Whittaker’s Berry Farm – my personal favorite. The owners and their staff are very kind and have great suggestions for recipes and care of the strawberries you pick. When you arrive they will assign a row just for you to pick – guaranteeing that you’re getting a fresh section of untouched berries.

They take such good care of their 15 acres that there are no weeds or mud to trudge through as you pick, and the variety of strawberries available are perfect for freezing, canning, jams, or just plain eating.
