UK cold weather maps have revealed when the country could be hit by a freezing polar blast within hours as temperatures plummet across large parts of the country.

The weather maps from WXCharts show temperatures falling far below zero in the early hours of Friday morning in the Scottish Highlands and closer to sea level in cities such as Inverness, Aberdeen, Wick, Glasgow, and Edinburgh.

Slightly to the south, regions in England could also see the mercury slip into single figures in cities such as Newcastle, Carlisle, Sheffield, and Middlesbrough. Further south these temperatures become milder but still very cool for this time of year.

In the likes of Manchester, Liverpool, Blackpool and parts of northern Wales such as Bangor and Anglesey, temperatures will vary between zero and 10C in some places in the early hours of tomorrow morning.

It comes as the UK makes its way through another year of unsettled weather that has seen a mix of varying temperatures, bright sunshine and heavy rain over recent weeks.

Temperatures will be at their mildest in the south, south east, and south west of the UK in counties such as Devon, Cornwall, Dorset, Somerset, and Kent as well as both East and West Sussex.

Overall, temperatures are low for this time of year, but the Met Office long-range forecasts suggest there could be change afoot later in the month ahead of the Euros 2024 tournament where thousands of Britons will flock to outside viewing areas.

In their forecast for June 11 to June 20, the Met Office predicts an unsettled picture of sunshine and showers, mostly with a chance of prevailing drier conditions.

The Met Office said: “A general continuation initially, of sunshine and showers for many areas, the odd one could be heavy across the south.

"Thereafter a build of pressure will probably bring settled conditions across the country for a few days, with dry, sunny conditions prevailing.

"While confidence in the timing of any change of type is uncertain, from the middle of the week towards the weekend dry conditions may start to decline with a greater chance of more unsettled weather developing.

"Should this happen, wettest conditions are likely to be in the north and west, with driest weather in the south and east.

"There is still a chance that drier conditions could remain in place more widely. Temperatures likely to be near or slightly below average at first, perhaps slightly above normal later.”
