Hamill brought life to Luke, and Star Wars as a whole, in 1977. Principal photography for Star Wars, later retitled Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope, lasted from March to July 1976, and his September 1951 birthday meant Hamill was 24 years old in the original Star Wars.

On December 17, 1978, Hamill married dental hygienist Marilou York in a private civil ceremony. They have three children: Nathan Elias, Griffin Tobias, and Chelsea Elizabeth.

In the 2019 reboot of the classic horror film Child's Play, Hamill is the voice of the murderous children's doll, Chucky. Unlike the original series, where the Chucky doll was cursed with the spirit of serial killer Charles Lee Ray (Brad Dourif), the 2019 version updates the idea to turn Chucky into a tampered-with AI.

Hamill has been deaf since birth. He was introduced to wrestling by his stepfather Michael Rich, who was the head wrestling coach at Loveland High School. Hamill attended the Rochester Institute of Technology for three years transferring there after a year at Purdue University.
