Are Trader Joe's employees trained to flirt with you?
In a recent episode on the Inside Trader Joe's podcast, CEO Bryan Palbaum addressed the rumors that employees are trained to flirt with customers and said it's just that – a rumor. But Palbaum said he understands why employees' signature chattiness “might be misinterpreted.”
In the same episode, Trader Joe's president and vice CEO Jon Basalone added, “That's just what niceness feels like.” Shayne Jones, a San Francisco Trader Joe's employee, confirmed to SFGATE that what the CEO said was true — flirting is definitely not in the employee handbook.
Its crew members can act genuinely nice towards customers because they're genuinely happy. Plus, they get a sizable discount to shop in stores, and since the chain famously never hosts sales, who wouldn't want to get S'mores Bars and Patio Potato Chips on the cheap?!
The workers and managers are super friendly and everyone is a big team there. And hours go by so fast because there is always something to do there! Very fun and motivational workspace. I worked at trader joes full time, which was a mistake for my mind, body, and soul.

Trader Joe's minimal use of traditional advertising, although effective in nurturing a loyal customer base, presents a weakness in terms of reaching potential customers who may be unfamiliar with the brand, limiting their growth potential.
Instead of calling their workers employees, Trader Joe's has nautical titles for positions. crew members are entry-level workers. Merchants are crew members who've received recognition for stellar customer service.

Managers who make six-figure salaries
(The average hourly pay for a crew member is listed at $13.87 on Glassdoor; Trader Joe's said it does not comment on salaries.) But as with any job, it's not for everyone.
Average Trader Joe's hourly pay ranges from approximately $11.37 per hour for Team Trainer to $28.47 per hour for Assistant Manager. The average Trader Joe's salary ranges from approximately $25,000 per year for Loader/Unloader to $417,476 per year for Senior Director of Operations.
Analytics firm Numerator found that the typical Trader Joe's shopper is white or Asian and between 25 and 44 years old, according to its data. She typically has a bachelor's degree or above and an annual income of more than $80,000.
“[The] average Trader Joe's Crew Member hourly pay is approximately $18.63, which is 42% above the national average,” reported Indeed.com. This positive work environment causes employees to love their jobs, which is demonstrated through their exceedingly great customer service.
In addition, the benefits, above average pay (for grocery store work) and fellow cheery coworkers, it's rare to find a truly rude employee. It's also the culture of the store, it's made very clear that you are expected to be kind, patient and helpful with each customer.
Two bells mean there are additional questions that need to be answered at the checkout. Three bells call over a manager-type person. And Three short bells–two long bells–three short bells… now we're just playing.
All this to say, please don't jump to the conclusion that something has been discontinued until you've had a crew member tell you so. It's probably just TOS (temporarily out of stock).
